Some of the popular file formats include Adobe PDF, Microsoft LIT, Amazon AZW, Mobipocket PRC, PDB, etc. Some popular PC content formats, such as HTML, TXT, and DOC, may also compete as e-book formats. In this article, let’s have a look at some of these popular file formats and their software readers.

1. Amazon AZW

With the production of Amazon Kindle, Amazon created also a file format that Kindle recognizes, called AZW. With its own DRM (Digital Rights Management) structure, AZW format protects the e-book publishers and authors from possible piracy. Kindle recognizes only this format, and other formats should be translated into AZW before they can be read through Kindle device. In order to do this, Kindle provides a free email conversion system, which helps you download the books in any other format to Kindle through an email. AZW is loosely based on Mobipocket’s popular MOBI file format.

Kindle DX – a large screen device that is actually 1.5 times larger than the regular Kindle display – offers native PDF support and according to the article “Which eBook Reader is the Most Suitable for Me?” has been specially designed for reading electronic versions of newspapers, magazines, and formatted books (Digital Book Readers).

2. Adobe PDF

Adobe’s PDF (Portable Document Format) is not just an e-book format, but also a popular PC file format. First created in 1993, it became popular long before the e-book revolution started. It was created for storing and transferring portable, printable documents. Adobe’s own PostScript format forms the basis of PDF documents.

PDF documents support compression, password protection, and are viewable in virtually all platforms (hence the name ‘portable document format’). It is estimated that more than 250 million PDF documents are in existence on the Web. Adobe’s software applications, Acrobat and Acrobat Reader were used to create and read PDF files, but in 2008, PDF was released as an open standard, and now there are several applications available to read and edit PDF documents. This has enhanced PDF’s popularity in the e-book arena.

3. Microsoft LIT

With severe competition from Adobe and other popular e-book formats, Microsoft also came up with their own proprietary e-book format, LIT. Files with extension ‘LIT’ are accessed and read by the Microsoft Reader, available as a free download from Microsoft website. The application is available only for Windows operating system.

Microsoft Reader can be used for reading e-books on portable devices with the help of ClearType technology, which renders improved text on those devices. It was first introduced in 2000.

LIT format also supports DRM (Digital Rights Management), protecting e-book author and publisher rights. You should activate the Microsoft Reader once installed in your PC, tablet PC, or pocket PC, through Reader activation website. You can purchase the e-books in LIT format from Microsoft Reader website as well.

4. Palm E-book Format (PDB)

Palm Database format (PDB) is a proprietary format used in Palm PDAs. It can however be accessed on Windows or other type of OS with the help of specialized software.

Palm’s own eReader is a free program for reading PDB files. This reader is available for a number of devices and operating systems—BlackBerry, iPhone, Macintosh, PalmOS, PocketPC, Symbian, Windows Mobile Smartphone, etc.

You can purchase and download e-books from eReader website, and read them through your device. There are also a number of classics in public domain available in PDB format for free. The purchased books are encrypted for safety.

5. Mobipocket PRC or MOBI

Mobipocket is a French software company that creates the Mobipocket Reader, which can be used to read e-books on your PDA or smart phone. The reader’s native format is PRC. The PRC format and Reader are supported under BlackBerry, Franklin eBookMan, PalmOS, Symbian, PocketPC, Windows Mobile Smartphone.

Mobipocket Reader gives you an e-book library for storing and managing all your e-books. You can edit the metadata associated with the e-books, such as author information, title, publisher, and rate e-books. You can transfer e-books to any of your PDA devices from your PC through a USB connection. You can also incorporate notes and annotations on your e-books and highlight any term. Also, the reader allows you to look up the definitions of any term easily through available dictionaries, which include Longman, Merriam Webster, Oxford, and others.

Conclusion

Those are the most popular of e-book document formats. There are also less popular formats associated with specific reading devices. However, since most readers recognize almost all formats, it is easy for users to read e-books in any reading device. The conversion and publishing of e-books on any of these formats is also easy with the help of specialized software.

Would I be able to view a live weather radar loop with an iPhone?

Im considering buying an unlocked iPhone to use with my T-mobile sim and was wondering if and how I could view a radar loop to see direction and intensity of approaching storms. It’s coming up on tornado season here in the midwest. If it’s as simple as loading a weather web page would my iPhone have the ability to loop the images like you can on a computer?

In Australia i know you can access live weather loops from the Bureau of Meterology website

hope that helps

Within five quarters, Apple sold over 6.1 million iPhones and 3.8 million iPhone 3G phone were sold in the second quarter of fiscal year 2009. Apple reached a huge figure of 21.4 million iPhone sold by end of March 2009.

Sales in Q4 2008 surpassed those of BlackBerry sales of 5.2 million units, which made Apple the third largest mobile phone manufacturer by revenue after Nokia & Samsung. Approximately, 6.4 million iPhones are active in the US alone.

iPhone users in EU surpass all others in mobile media usage. More than 80% of them are from France, Germany and the UK using it to browse news and information on the mobile web, compared to 32% of other smartphone users. According to the survey, 42% of iPhone users normally visit social networking site on their device compared with the market average of 3% and 10% of smartphone owners. E-mail is another popular feature, with nearly 70% of iPhone users sending and receiving email with their device, compared with just 26% among other smartphone users.

Apple improved iPhone handset features and also reduced the price which had a significant on its uptake, especially in the European market. Despite its small user-base, iPhone is already in top 10 handsets for online browsing in the UK and in the top 5 in France and Germany. It’s giving devices like Nokia and Sony Ericsson a definite run for their money.

Some of the reasons why iPhone has been able to replace various popular smartphone available. iPhone applications normally run one at a time, although most functionality is still available when making a call or listening to music. The home screen can be accessed at any time by a hardware button below the screen. iPhone allows audio conferencing, caller ID, call merging, call holding, and integration with other cellular network features. For Example, if a song is played while a call is being received; it gradually fades out, and fades back when the call gets over. The design & layout of the music library is similar to that of an iPod. The iPhone can sort its media library by these criteria like songs, artists, albums, videos, playlists, genres, composers, podcasts, audio books and compilations etc. iPhone uses a large font that allows users plenty of room to touch their selection. Internet access is available when the iPhone is connected to a local area Wi-Fi or a wide area GSM or EDGE network.

The iPhone 3G has a maximum download rate of 1.4 Mbps in the United States. The maps application can access Google Maps in map, satellite, or hybrid form. It can generate directions between two locations, while providing optional real-time traffic information. According to Google, iPhone generates 50 times more search requests than any other mobile handsets. For text input, iPhone has a virtual keyboard and also has automatic spell checking and correction, predictive word capabilities, and a dynamic dictionary that learns new words. iPhone also features an e-mail program that supports HTML e-mail, which enables the user to embed photo in an e-mail message, PDF, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint attachments to mail messages can be viewed on the phone. iPhone and iPhone 3G feature a built in fixed-focus 2.0 megapixel camera located on the back.

The iPhone 3GS has a 3.2 megapixel camera, with auto focus. It can be cropped on the device itself and directly uploaded to YouTube or other services.

There are over 65,000 third party applications already available at app store to date and are forecasted to reach a million marks very soon. More and more enhanced features are expected to come from Apple and to rule the mobile market very soon.

Find Service URL For Blog?

I am wanting to add blog posts to my blog from my iPhone. The simple solution would be to just use Mobile Safari on my iPhone but when I tap add blog post safari just crashes, and the odd time it dose work there is 2-3 second delay between taping the letter and it going in the text box.

I downloaded BlogWriter Lite I am in the set up stage I have selected blog type as other but it is asking for the Service URL. I havn’t a clue what this is, it is also asking for Port, it is pre-set to 80, I don’t know if I need to change it or not.

A Few more details: URL for the blog site: geeks.pirillo.com

If anyone has a solution for this I would be very grateful.

Thanks

I’m guessing that “Service URL” may refer to the internal URL used by the blog software to add a new post – in other words, the page that you would be accessing by clicking the blog post button that causes Safari to crash. Specifically, in your case that would be:

http://geeks.pirillo.com/profiles/blog/new

It could also be the URL for the blog’s control panel, but that would be less likely. I always administer my blogs using the web interface, so I wish I could answer this question more definitively but don’t have much experience with third party blog clients. As for the port, it would be port 80 because port 80 is the default port that the web uses, and the bog is web based.
