iphone cool features

In January of 2007, Apple announced that it was entering into the portable phone market with the development and launch of the iPhone. Scheduled for release in June of 2007, the Apple iPhone will be able to play music like an iPod, surf and browse the web, take pictures, showcase videos, send text messages and emails, and, maybe, make or take a phone call or two.

Big deal.

For every new cell phone or cell phone company that introduces itself to the market, proclaiming that their particular model of cell phone can, say, play music, there are dozens of other names and brands, some popular, some not, that can do exactly the same thing. What’s the catch? What’s the hook? Where’s the innovative technological design that’s supposed to make the public stand up and take notice?

Now, the Apple iPhone does have complete virtual touch-screen. There are no raised buttons to press and push, and everything is operated with the sense of a finger. Now, that actually is a cool feature, but, it might not be completely practical. Why? Simply because when I look at my hands, I see chubby fingers that are not going to be able to accurately press any button on a small touch screen. Now, unless that screen is 6″ across, which, if that were the case, might defeat the entire mobility purpose of the phone.

Why does Apple feel the need to develop and create their own portable phone? Could it be that they really want to revolutionize portable communication? Do they want to make the world a better place? Can they offer something that no one else can?

Look at it this way: why does Lindsay Lohan think she could sing?

Because it’s another revenue stream to be mined, that’s why? Now, there’s no doubt that the iPhone is cool, and will find a popular and receptive audience. But, like Lohan’s singing attempts, it doesn’t really improve the world and the world wouldn’t notice it if it weren’t around. It’s just there, and it will make money. Partially because of its features, partially because of curiosity seekers, and partially because of people loyal to the brand name.

No one is begrudging Apple for getting in on the portability craze. After all, Apple may have taken that craze to incredible heights with the development and release of the iPod. So, it makes sense, then, to fuse the iPod with a cellular phone. But, it’s already been done before.

Maybe the real issue is that if Apple released a phone without web, email, video player and other bells and whistles, that it simply wouldn’t sell and just sit there on the shelves. If Lindsay Lohan had to sing on her own merits, she might be joining that lonely phone. But, add some studio effects, create some stylish videos and surround her with talented musicians, and she becomes passable and tolerable.

In today’s ultra-connected world, it seems that no one will buy a cell phone for the expressed purpose of having a phone with you while on the go. You need to have everything or your will appear to be nothing.

iphone contract cancellation

iphone contract cancellation

In recent years, cell phone usage has sky rocketed. Consumer reviews and tech columnists have devoted volumes to the subject of which phone to choose. The loyal followers of the iPhone, the Blackberry, the Palm, the Sidekick, ect, have engaged in fiery online debates over which one is better.

Relatively little has been written, however, on comparing cell phone carriers. To a considerable extent, a cell phone is only as good as the carrier that provides the signal. We’ll see here that evaluating carriers and their monthly plans is every bit as involved as reviewing the cell phones they run on.

J.D.Power and Associates have reported that the quality of *all* cell phone services has become so consistently high across the board that there was no longer a reason to even own a “land line” anymore. Paradoxically, ask any of your friends about cell phone reception horror stories and they’ll have plenty of fireside tales to tell you. J.D. Power and Associates also asserts that call carrier customers who did not have their complaints resolved by customer service were six times more likely to switch carriers. And in fact, this happens all the time. If one isn’t satisfied with one’s cell phone, it’s easy enough to get another one. But dropping a cell phone carrier is another matter. The advent of phone carrier contracts with cancellation penalty fees has largely come about to combat cell phone carrier dissatisfaction. Even the advent of 3G Networks, which was announced with great fanfare, still has not quelled a considerable percentage of cell phone customers that are not happy with their carriers. According to comScore Networks, one in four cell phone customers are not satisfied with their wireless carrier. With such an astonishingly large statistic, it’s clear that cell phone signal technology is still in its adolescence. Keeping this in mind, let’s now compare carriers.

According to comScore, Verizon Wireless has consistently been rated the best carrier in terms of coverage and customer service. Overall, only six percent of customers break their service contract.

AT&T/Cingular come in second, just behind Verizon. Alltel’s customer service contract breakers are more numerous, coming in at 9 percent, while Sprint/Nextel have an even higher dissatisfaction rating at 11 percent. At the bottom of the heap is T-Mobile, with 15% of customers wanting to break out of contract obligations.

But there might be more to this than meets the eye. The above comScore survey is not location specific and uses the percentage of customers breaking the service contract as the litmus test for popularity. A J.D. Power and Associates survey does indeed confirm Verizon as the leader, but mentions that this is particularly true in the Northeast, where Verizon’s coverage is the strongest. T-Mobile, with the lowest rating in the comScore survey, actually ranked first in the Southwest, according to J.D. Power. Moreover, Verizon also ranks lower in terms of the phones that run its service, which tend to use CDMA technology rather than GSM. As a result, Verizon phones tend to not accept SIM cards (Subscriber Identity Modules) which prevents their use when travelling overseas. Verizon’s rates also ranked considerably higher than its rivals, and though its customer service gets high marks, its bills tend to be confusing to read.

J.D. Powers also claims that Sprint has a strong popularity in the Southwest, yet at the same time it concedes that Sprint also ranks lowest in call quality. The latter statistic was also confirmed by a PC Magazine survey. By contrast, PC Magazine ranks T-Mobile as the best carrier in terms of pricing, and second only to Alltel in service plan options. T-Mobile also offers its service on a wide variety of phones and smartphones with GSM/SIM card compatibility enabling international use.

Prepaid cell phones deserve their own category all together. Virgin Mobile won the highest marks, just ahead of TracFone and T-Mobile respectively. Verizon, ATT&T, follow in order of decreasing popularity, with poor Sprint/ Nextel once again at the bottom of the heap.

Oftentimes people let their choice of service providers be determined by what phone they choose. Let me suggest that you might just as easily consider the reverse route; find the best carrier for your needs and chose your phone from there.

Los Angeles, CA – RIME (www.Rimemag.com)

Rime’s recent development of an iPhone App has offered new reach on a global platform.

The Rime App version 2 will be available in November 2009 with a ton of new features including videos, up to date news, push notification, and a magazine library that can hold up to eight different issues of Rime in one.

Over the years, Rime’s distribution has stretched worldwide, moving hundreds of thousands of magazines globally. Despite trimming some of our print distribution due to the economic recession of 2008/2009, we’ve excelled even further by the development of digital platforms such as the Rime store, Rimemag.com and our iPhone App. Our current digital reach is over 120,000 per month.

Our goal is continue the strong growth within the industry and develop new ideas in the digital spectrum.

Los Angeles, CA – RIME (
www.Rimemag.com)
is a long time platform for everything L.A. and Hip Hop. Our 8 years of print and online publishing has made Rime one of the most well-known and credible publications in the world. Our re-launch of the website in 2009 has catapulted RimeMag.com into closer territory of the top urban websites. Our Alexa ranking has risen rapidly from 2,100,000 in June 2009 to 389,000 as of Sept 2009. RimeMag.com is currently ranked as 62,000 out of all websites registered in United States.

Available through the site we also offer our new digital magazine that offers the same layout, text, and advertisements as our printed version, while improving accessibility and reach…which also now includes the Rime iPhone App.

Founded in 2001 by Jason Flores at age 19, Rime’s first issue was distributed by hand by Mr. Flores until getting two Tower Records accounts. After approximately two weeks, Mr. Flores received a phone call from the purchaser at Tower Headquarters in Sacramento. Because the magazines in both stores had sold out, Tower wanted the publication in all their stores, nationally.

Once national distribution was attained rather quickly in early 2002, Rime was fortunate enough to extend its distribution with Ingram Periodicals, allowing Rime’s entrance into Borders, Barnes & Noble, B. Dalton and others nationally.

The steps to growth continued when in 2003, Jason Flores signed a contract with Curtis Circulation, the nations largest magazine distributor (Oprah, Rolling Stone, Maxim, Sports Illustrated). This launched Rime into a new category, as a contender to some of the largest most influential urban mags in the world. Our content has been known to be some of the most sought-after and respected types of articles in our industry:
History of the Nike Cortez, Comparing the Republican & Democrat Health Plans, Run DMC Still Runnin NYC

iphone email setup problems

If you are and iPhone aficionado, you absolutely want your iPhone to work on your ShoreTel IPBX! I recently downloaded VeNetCorps SipPhone from the iPhone App store! There are several SIP phone apps at the store, but most have a pre-programmed domain name for the sip registration proxy server. If you want to use your own SIP proxy there was no easy way to change the IP address so you had to hack your DNS to get it to point to the ShoreTel SIP proxy. Also you need at least iPhone firmware 2.2 as previous versions had WiFi connectivity challenges that negatively impacted the potential for using a SIP soft phone. After the iPhone WiFi acquired an IP address, if you attempted to ping the address you would see latency in excess of 300ms. With version 2.2 this issue has all but become unnoticeable. As with any SIP extension setup on ShoreTel, you need to assign sip extension proxy resources on a ShoreGear switch. In the sites section of the ShoreWare Director, make sure you assign a virtual IP address. This is the address you will use for your “domain’ when you setup the IPhone SipPhone. Clearly you will need a User setup with a SIP phone password defined in the individual user section of the ShoreWare Director.

Clearly the assumption here is that you have a WAP that your iPhone can connect to. Also that that wireless connection can route to your ShoreTel network! Once the ShoreTel SIP user, virtual IP address and proxy resources are configured it is time to configure your iPhone SipPhone! After you down load the application and tap to activate the application you will get a screen that lists the options: Dialer, Recent, Contacts, Accounts and Settings. Hit the Accounts tab and you will then EDIT a new SIP account. To get this app to work on ShoreTel you need to enter only three values. First you need to enter the domain name, we have previously defined in the ShoreTel Director as the Virtual IP address. The Username and password are also as specified in the individual user setup in ShoreTel. Hit the DONE tab, and the phone should register and you can make and receive calls from your ShoreTel. I put together a video clip that covers this so you can see that it acutely works! The video suggests that you enter the user name, but if you want to call the iPhone from a ShoreTel extension, enter the user’s extension number instead. This was just a fun project and latency on the iPhone WiFi is still a challenge for SIP phone usage. I suspect that Version 3.0 of the iPhone will fix this small issue, but it was a blast trying it out! Enjoy!

For the longest time, the CECT P168 was the best seller among the iPhone clones. It still is, but it’s grip on the market is weakening. I think that’s because as consumers start to accept and embrace the Chinese knock offs as legitimate contenders, they’re also starting to become more choosy and picky about which model they go with. As there are many options available today, you can literally customize your phone based on the features that you want.

And, if there is one flaw with the extremely popular CECT P168 iClone, it’s that it doesn’t contain Java so you can’t download more games and third party software on it.

The company addressed this with the release of the CECT i9 iPHONE a shake and tilt quad band model that contained the latest version of Java. The SciPhone has been extremely well received because of the previously mentioned features and because the phone is among the sleekest, thinnest, and fastest iPhone clone to date.
