social networking policy library

To determine whether a senior is socially isolated or enjoys an active social life, we must first see where the senior resides, the organizations the senior belongs to and the activities she participates in.

Retirement Communities – Seniors residing in retirement communities can participate in a wide range of community organized activities that can help minimize isolation.

Apartments with gyms – Seniors living in apartments with gyms can exercise regularly and get to know the neighbors while doing so.

Golf or Tennis Clubs – Some golf clubs and tennis clubs provide these elder people with a social network as well as the opportunity to exercise.

Groups based on common interests – Some seniors enjoy meeting with others who share common interests such as gardening, knitting, sewing, discussing foreign policy, writing etc.

Are you a socially isolated senior citizen? Want social connections but don\’t know where to start? Here are some suggestions:

·         One can visit to the local senior center, where they offer lectures, classes and meals.

·         The local library is a wonderful meeting point for the seniors. The local library can provide book discussion groups as well as lectures and concerts.

·         Some local colleges and universities have special classes, concerts or other social activities for seniors. If seniors attend such classes, their minds will be occupied and they will not feel any sort of isolation from the society.

·         The local YMCA has movement classes for seniors.

·         One of the safest places where a senior member can engage himself are the health clubs. These health clubs have exercise and yoga classes for seniors.

·         Many civic, medical, educational and arts organizations look for volunteers. Senior members can act as volunteers to these organizations where they can meet a lot of like-minded people.

·         Affinity groups such as organizations or clubs for guitar players, singers, environmentalists, theatre actors can help the senior members to increase their social interactions.

·         The senior members can act as volunteers for churches, mosques, synagogues or any other religious organizations that offer adult education.

·         Widowed or divorced seniors who want companionship could consider online dating, which has connected more than one happy older couple. But don\’t always believe what you read in a profile. And it is helpful to follow your instincts — if something about the person doesn\’t feel right, don\’t pursue it.

It\’s never too late to get socially connected. Social interactions help with physical health as well. People with social connections tend to stay healthier. In home companion care is another great option for senior care, but both the persons are confided in a home, which prevents from any social interactions.

social media applications for business

Barack Obama started using  social media and the marketing gurus went “Oh my God, he’s a genius, now all we have to do is use his name to promote this and voila, clients will be lining up to buy social media marketing (SMM) servicesâ€.  Well, it didn’t quite happen that way. And the wonderful case study that was “Presidential candidate Barack Obama†now became a not-so-active name on various online portals including, Twitter, where from November 2008 to May 2009, his twitter update has had five posts. Yep, only five posts in six months.

So what is happening in the Social Media world right now?

Well, first of all, social media website use has exploded with millions of people using popular Web 2.0 applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and dozens of others. I personally “play†and “work†on many but my favorites remain Twitter and Facebook.

Celebrities and politicians seem to have found a way to pontificate one-way to their audiences. I say pontificate because most of these are rarely engaged in a two-way discussion, more times sending out their updates but not really engaging with others who may wish to interact with them. Politicians and celebrities across the globe have taken their messages to their fans and followers on Twitter and Facebook.

However, millions of users and dozens of so-called SMM experts later, I find that small business remain offline and positively scared of using social media websites.

The business owners I interact with when I’m speaking at an event or when I’m networking offline (yes I still do that) are concerned about using social media websites to promote themselves. They are worried about the lack of privacy and a misconception that they need to be technically savvy to use such websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. These same business owners also mention lack of time and lack of trained “marketing†resources which prevent them from taking the social media marketing plunge.

For marketers, social media marketing means a huge opportunity. The opportunity comes from being able to demonstrate actual results to end clients in the form of visibility and generated buzz.  For small businesses who have taken the social media marketing plunge, it means visibility at low cost. For everyone, Social Media Marketing means; buzz, visibility, website traffic and leads, assuming SMM is executed properly.

Social media marketing is here to stay and can bring tremendous value to those who know how to leverage it. From gaining new clients, to gaining visibility, branding, and credibility, not to mention leads, social media marketing is one activity that everyone needs to “find†time for and “create†a budget for.

As an individual seeking a new job or as a business seeking new clients, here are some very basic yet very key strategies to keep in mind when embarking on the social media marketing journey:

1. Reap what you sow: This saying applies very well to Social Media Marketing.  If you don’t begin leveraging social media websites to promote yourself or your business and especially if your competition is, you’ll be left behind in the dust of their visibility & buzz.

2. Make Time: Either Make time for social media marketing for yourself / business OR find an expert who can do it for you. Not doing anything is not an option. Find a marketer who knows social networking.

3. Land your next opportunity: Remember the impression you want to cultivate online.  You wouldn’t go to a face-to-face networking meeting and complain “how tired you areâ€, “how sleepy you are†etc. Then don’t do it online either. Online networking has reached a new level and you need to show your “networking†savvy by creating an impression which will land you the next opportunity, a new client or whatever you seek.

4. Don’t end up in jail or unemployed: If you don’t want to end up fired or end up in jail, be careful about what you say online.  Professional behavior should be the norm (even for teenagers who don’t realize the impact of what they put out there on Facebook).  Prospective employers, prospective clients, current clients, and anyone who wants to look you up, can and will. Once you’ve put something out there, it is out there forever.

5. Frequency matters just as much as content: Blogging once a month or writing a tweet once every week or posting a FB status once every other day is not the way to grow your visibility. All marketing activities require frequency, consistency, and long-term effort. You wouldn’t expect one advertisement in the Detroit Free Press to generate leads immediately or ongoing.Similarly, online marketing requires consistent, frequent, and long-term effort.

Again, remember, not doing anything is not an option.

Just like email and voicemail, yes, those now archaic technologies that we don’t even think about; texting, Facebooking, Tweeting, blogging, and audio & video podcasting are all slowly becoming mainstream. Social media marketing is also fun, quick, and a cost-effective way to get visibility and it provides the ability to connect with anyone, anywhere in the world.

Implement Social Media Marketing correctly and you’ll find that practice does make us perfect!

social media fundraising

social media fundraising

1000 dollars may not look like a lot of money to some nonprofits, but to small organizations, it can be a large sum of money. It’s a proven fact that when times are tough, donations fall – often dramatically. And in today’s tough economic climate, every organization is feeling the pinch.
The internet has merged into the fabric of our lives over the last decade and many of the fundamental activities have been taken online. One of them is Nonprofit free online fundraising. Online Fundraising has mostly been a community thing till recently but with the relatively recent international calamities such as the Tsunami and Katrina has bought around a huge fundraising exercise online with a large percentage of success.

A decade ago it would have been hard to convince someone to donate online or to expect to raise funds via the internet and become Fundraiser. The permeation of internet has made this idea of free internet fundraisingcome of age and today more and more organizations either big or small are venturing in this direction. What started off as a small effort to get a close knit community to contribute has now become a substantial movement where any organization looking to raise funds for a cause is turning to the internet as a valid forum.

One of the key reasons of success of free online fundraising has been the low cost of set up and the vast group of people who can be tapped for requests for contribution. Technology is an excellent enabler for such ideas and today there are companies dedicated to developing solutions for the online fundraising industry.

So if your organization is looking for raising funds for a worthy cause and are not sure of how to create interest in it, then you should definitely go with online fundraising. online fundraising does not mean asking someone to contribute just because the money is needed. Instead it can be made fun where a game or a challenge can be marketed and all money received though this channel would be used for the cause in hand. Many a times, it is also possible to get corporate sponsorship for such kind of online fundraising ideas.

You had to be living in a cave over the past ten days to miss the iPhone hype, and while it’s now replaced by the Batman hype, I thought I’d share with my experience a week or so in.

There have been plenty of articles written about the new iPhone 3G: Walt Mossberg, gizmodo, Engadget and cnet, so I’m not going to give a review, but I am going to tell you why it’s a game changer and why it’s more computer than phone. Building on what David Pogue wrote about last week regarding applications, let’s go a little deeper and talk about usage.

First, if you take a look at any of the reviews listed above, you’ll notice that the phone usage comes last. Why? Well, like I said, this is more computer than phone. It’s about what you can do with it, and oh, by the way, you can make calls as well. As I look at my usage over the past week, it’s weighted about 80% data/computer and 20% phone; if anything, I think I’ll probably up the data/computer percentage a bit over time. We’ll see.

And the roll call:

#1 It crashes

I’ll get the negative out of the way first. Sure, I’ve had some BlackBerry restarts and crashes, but I’ve had more in the last week on the iPhone than I’ve had in the last few months on my BlackBerry Curve.  So iPhone -1

#2 Application store

It’s a single place to get all the goods for the iPhone and plenty of applications, many of which are free, that really expand the usage of the phone. And that’s the key; the application store is a conduit for adding features to your phone. Just as your computer doesn’t do much without software, the hardware and application software from third parties takes this phone to another level. Application store +3

So let’s talk about computer-like behavior and some of these applications that enable it.

#3 Where you at

Borrowing for a second from Boost Mobile and Kanye, you really don’t have to ask this again. Loopt, demonstrated at WWDC, does run on other mobile platforms, but on the iPhone it really shines. Add your friends to your networks and Loopt keeps track of where you are via the built-in GPS, as well as letting you share photos and messages, all without a call. Location-based services +2

#4 Music

Devices that play music anywhere have (in many thanks to the iPod) become almost ubiquitous, but the iPhone with its applications manages to best them all. First, Pandora –yes the one that your IT dept. may be trying to block on your network–runs on the iPhone. Once I installed the app on my phone, using my same Pandora log-in gave me access to all my stations that I’d been listening to on my Mac. And it has the same thumbs up /down feature so Pandora can keep learning about the kind of music I like and don’t. Oh and it plays over 3G as well as WiFi, so truly music Pandora on the go.

Shazam, and I don’t mean Captain Marvel. Instead, launch Shazam and hold it up to a radio/tv/speaker and Shazam will listen to and identify the song. Now you’re one touch away from previewing and buying it on iTunes. Music on the iPhone +3

#5 Games

Taking full advantage of the accelerometer games like Crash Bandicoot and iPint (which by the way is a GREAT example of advergaming gone right!) allows the user to control the games by simply tilting and rolling the phone. Playing feels definitely un-phone-like, more like a PSP like experience, a great way to kill time when you’re not making a call. Game play +2

#6 Social Networking

What computer phone would be complete without social networking tools? And with the new iPhone came AIM Chat; as expected, it’s connected to your iChat / AIM account so it uses the same log-in to give you access to your buddy lists.

Recently updated (thankfully, as the initial release version was light on features) is the Facebook app. So chat and the majority of my main Facebook features, all on the go, a winner. Staying Connected +3

#7 Email and calendar

Building on the Mac’s already well-integrated email and calendar in Leopard, Apple’s new MobileMe gives you Over the Air (OTA) syncing, just like those corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Servers. Now admittedly, MobileMe had some issues in the maelstrom of switch from .mac and new iPhone release and some users have had problems with the OTA syncing, but my usage has been great. And I love that my calendar, email and contacts stay up to date across my computer, web and iPhone. OTA syncing +1

I’ll stop with seven reasons, but the list could go on, mainly due to the great applications, leveraging the hardware and software that Apple built. It’s a game changer in my opinion. Why? Because it’s less about the phone and more about the device. Being able to work, play, connect, post, etc. pretty much wherever you are is very powerful. And while other devices were here first, the iPhone just gets it a little more right.
