iPhone/iPod External Battery?

I just got my 8GB iPhone and I knew the battery life wasn’t to great to begin with, I just need to find a descent external battery that will work with my iPhone and 5G iPod. One thing though is that I hear that alot of these battery packs only work if your iPod/iPhone has a full charge, so if the internal battery is already drained then it will not work at all. Is there anything out there that actually charges your iPod/iPhone and which runs on AA or AAA batteries.
